As part of Yorkshire Meat’s experimentation with various other rare breeds, we traveled to near by Easingwold to buy a set of 6 weaners. These wonderful pigs are British Lop crossed by Berkshire.
The British Lop breed is an endangered species and it is mostly confined to Devon County, but is also present in Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset Counties. It is highly valued for its docile nature, good grazing ability and excellent carcass for both bacon and pork.
Like all of our other breeds, the Berkshire is a rare one. A typical Berkshire features a black body with white legs, a white tip to the tail, and prick ears. It has a great temperament and wonderful mothering qualities. For years the Royal Family had a large Berkshire Herd at Windsor Castle, and the first recorded breeding was done by Queen Victoria.
We decided to take 5 small weaners and also the older runt of a previous litter called Louise (or Lou for short). They are all friendly and love digging in the soil and being subject to regular tickles!
